Lacquered Pencase

A Rare Ottoman Lacquered Pencase, Signed Ahmad, Dated 1196 AH / 1781 AD The poem in Ottoman Turkish in nasta‘liq script on the pencase reads:

“Aceb nakş oldu bu resmin edası Güzel düşmüş tuti yeşil boyası
Nukuşu ol kadar … ü rana
Altun ile gümüş tahrir arası
Müzeyyen oldu nukuşu güller ile
Şükufe üzre sabra karar alası
… devat-ı hub ü rana
Bakınca ziyade olur safası”

(Such a wonderful design this pencase has
How beautiful is its parrot-feather green
Its decoration is so…
Between gold and silver outline
It is decorated with roses
On flowers which leave no room for patience
… this pleasing, beautiful pencase
Gives pleasure to the viewer)

The artist appears to be Hezargiradizade Ahmed Ataullah Efendi, a famous lacquer master who became famous in the first half of the 19th century.
